Grape Profile: Susumaniello is one of Puglia’s rare native grapes, known for producing wines with deep color, concentrated dark fruit, vibrant acidity, and moderate tannins. Typical flavor profiles include blackberry, black cherry, plum, violet, Mediterranean herbs, and spice. Unlike some southern Italian varieties, Susumaniello often retains freshness and elegance despite the region’s warm climate.

Region Profile: Salento occupies the southernmost peninsula of Puglia, often referred to as the “heel of Italy’s boot.” Surrounded by the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, the region benefits from abundant sunshine, cooling maritime breezes, and a long growing season. The area’s limestone, clay, and sandy soils help retain moisture while promoting concentration and aromatic complexity.

Pair with: Grilled and roasted red meats. Barbecued pork and sausages. Rich tomato-based dishes like pasta and pizza. Aged cheeses like pecorino and parmigiano-reggiano and blue cheeses.
